Washakie County is over 2200 square miles with more than eight thousand residents. Ten Sleep and Worland are the two major residential locations. Washakie County was formed in February of 1911 and is named after Chief Washakie of the Shoshonie people.

Search and Rescue (SAR) is defined as the employment, coordination and utilization of available resources and personnel in relieving distress, preserving life and removing survivors from the site of a disaster, an emergency or a hazard. In the case of lost, stranded, entrapped or injured people the goal of Search and Rescue is to bring them to safety.

The Washakie County Search and Rescue (SAR) Team is under the direction of the Washakie County Sheriff. It's members are community members from all walks of life with a variety of experience and education. They have come together to provide vital emergency search and rescue services for Washakie County and surrounding areas.<

The Washakie County Search and Rescue Team is available twenty-four hours a day, three hundred sixty-five days a year. Rain, sleet, hail, snow and blistering heat from the flatlands, to the waterways, to the peaks of the Big Horn Mountains the volunteer members of the Washakie County Search and Rescue Team will respond when someone is in need.

Washakie County Search and Rescue does not receive funding from taxing or levies. It operates solely through donations, 501(c)(3) organization. Much of the equipment the team uses has also been received through generous donations. Maintenance is done by unit members on their own time. For some this unit is the only hope they have on the worst day of their life. There is no other ready resource within the county that can provide the expertise, tools and equipment this team can provide.
